My work with patients and clients draws from my my clinical training as well as lived experiences. I have worked in a broad range of clinical settings from academic, to non-profit, to health-tech, and from small community based clinics to large hospital systems. I have presented at national and international level conferences, and am actively involved in advocacy. I am a trained biomedical engineer and epidemiologist, and have worked as middle school teacher.
I immigrated to the United States as a child and have lived throughout the US before settling in San Francisco for my medical training. I speak Mandarin and some French. I currently reside in San Francisco with my partner, children, and dog. I enjoy spending time outdoors, gardening, hiking, and watching mystery shows.
My clinical training as a child and adolescent psychiatrist gives me special expertise in working with young people and their families. I take a whole-systems approach when working with children, including looking at how the family is functioning as a whole, and how parent-child relationships are affected, along with how the child is, or is not fitting into in their school and community environments. When working with adults, this training gives me a particular perspective on how childhood experiences have shaped a person.
I greatly enjoy working with transitional age youth (age 17 to 26) who are developing into their adult selves. I have expertise in working with women's mental health and maternal mental health, including issues related to infertility, pregnancy, and postpartum. Becoming a parent, or trying to become a parent can evoke many complicated feelings and challenges. I enjoy working with adults who may be experiencing parenting related struggles, or who find that their own mental health may be holding them back from becoming the kind of parent that they want to be.
I have a special interest in how cultural identity shapes mental and emotional wellbeing, and have lectured on cultural identity formation.
